3 Things to Consider Before Choosing a Home Gym Treadmill

Your Speed

Are you planning to walk, jog or run on the treadmill?

Most people would answer ‘a combination,’ which is great, but if you’re investing in a home cardio machine, you’ll want to get the best option for your needs. While a budget-friendly treadmill can run at 10 kilometres per hour, it’s not meant to be used at that speed regularly. The occasional jog is fine, but if you’re maxing out the treadmill daily, the motor will wear down fast.

Instead of the top speed, focus on the treadmill’s horsepower. In general, you should pick home treadmills with a minimum of:

  • 1.0hp for walking,
  • 2.0hp for jogging, and
  • 3.0hp for running.

You should also consider your pace when comparing treadmill sizes — or more accurately, treadmill belt sizes. For running, we recommend treadmills with a belt at least 45cm wide and 120cm long (more if you’re 6ft tall and higher).

Your Available Space

Keep a clearance of 2ft in the front and sides of your treadmill and 6ft behind
Keep a clearance of 2 feet in the front and sides of your treadmill and 6 feet behind.

Even the most compact treadmill will take up a lot of space. While all Powertrain treadmills are foldable, you need to ensure that you have enough clearance around the machine, especially the space behind the running deck.

As a general rule, you should leave 2 feet (61cm) of clear space in the front and sides of the treadmill, and 5 to 6 feet at the rear end. This allows heat from the motor to dissipate and ensures your safety if you need to suddenly alight the treadmill.

Lastly, check the ceiling clearance — there should be 1–2 feet of headroom when you’re standing on the machine.

Aside from clearance, you should also consider:

  • Where you will plug in the treadmill
  • Where to store the treadmill when it’s folded
  • How much noise the treadmill makes

A rubber treadmill mat will help dampen the noise and protect the floor under your cardio machine.

Console and Controls

The console is an important part of any treadmill
The console is an important part of any treadmill.

Most treadmills now come with real-time feedback and entertainment features, from basic MP3 input to streaming apps and more. If you can’t choose between two treadmill models, look at the console. Is it easy to understand?

If you do interval training, you’ll want a machine with preset speed and incline buttons — if only to save you from repeatedly mashing the console while you’re running. Extra features, such as playback and volume controls, are also great if you love listening to podcasts and music. And for higher-end treadmills, a touch screen with WiFi capabilities lets you customise your entertainment experience like never before.
